Litter Pick 30/06/2024

Just a Quick Note

23rd June 2024

The e-newsletter of the Twmbarlwm Society

Hello Folks

Hooray! June has become the “blazing” June it’s supposed to be – but there’s still no guarantee it’s going to be like that this coming weekend for our monthly litter pick on Twmbarlwm. If it is nice and sunny and you come up to help us with the litter pick, please remember to apply some suncream and wear a hat – as usual just be sensible and dress appropriately for the weather and terrain.

When we have our cup of tea at the end of the pick – we’ll also have some soft drinks and water available.

There will be a more complete newsletter next week but I’m sending this now just to remind everyone of this weekend’s litter pick – hope to see you there.

The Last-Sunday-Of-The-Month Litter Pick:–

OUR NEXT LITTER PICK WILL BE ON SUNDAY 30th JUNE 2024

As usual, Please make your own way there and we will meet you at the car park below the Twmp at 10:30 am.

We are usually there for a couple of hours and we collect litter from the area immediately around the car park and some of us walk around the wider area to check out fences, paths etc. and effect any repairs if we are able. Tools, Pickers, Bags and Gloves will be supplied.

This is also a great opportunity to meet other members and learn more about the area and the work that the Society gets involved with.

Please make your own way to the car park at the end of Mountain Road, below the Twmp. We will provide tea and bikkies to all helpers after the pick and there will be soft drinks on offer too – or bring your own picnic if you need to.

Don’t forget – if you are taking a walk up there any day of the week for exercise or walking the dog, why not think about taking a rubbish bag with you to collect any litter on your way – every little helps. If you do leave any filled bags in the corner of the car park, make sure to let us know so that we can inform the council to collect it.

Below is a few photos from our last litter pick to illustrate how much we often gather

DAMAGE TO TWMBARLWM

Forgive me for repeating this reminder every month but the damage to the landscape and fences continues and we are determined to find the culprits who persistently cut the fence surrounding the hill fort. The fence has been funded and installed by the hard work of Twmbarlwm Society volunteers and repeatedly repairing the damage is expensive and time consuming. We are trying to manage the landscape for the benefit of everybody, to improve the bio-diversity of the area and protect the Scheduled Monument from possible fire damage and this mindless vandalism destroys all the good work of some dedicated people.

We have held discussions with the local police and they will be increasing their presence in the area because the cutting of fences etc. is regarded as criminal damage and should be reported to the police – I would like to urge anyone who is up there and witness this sort of behaviour and damage to report it to the police on their 101 non-emergency service. There is a dedicated police team (The Rural Crime Team) trying to help organisations such as ourselves.

If you have problems getting through to 101 you can report crime to Gwent Police via email on – contact@gwent.police.uk. When you email to report something I suggest providing them with a grid reference and/or What3Words location (see info at end of this email), as much information as possible about the type of crime and if it is related to the scheduled monument mention that you are reporting a Heritage Crime under Operation Heritage Cymru. Ask for a crime reference number and then for the incident report to be forwarded to the Rural Crime Team. Reporting everything is important to ensure that adequate resources are allocated to deal with the problems.

You should identify yourself in the email but if you don’t want to get involved with reporting crime then please let us know and we will do it on your behalf.

GET INVOLVED

Please pass this message on if you can’t help out yourself … “Remember – it would be really useful to get some feedback from other members who walk up there and to give us a report on what they see. Not just the bad stuff like the illegal off-roading, vandalism and fly-tipping – but the good stuff, like what wildlife you spot up there or have you chatted to visitors from far flung places? – what’s their story? – what’s your story?.”

If you feel like writing a few words of your experience of a visit to Twmbarlwm – or have taken some smashing photos – I’ll include it in this Newsletter and put it on our website. Come on get more active – you joined this society because you love the mountain, let us know what you think.
