Archaeology Gets Go Ahead

GREAT NEWS

After many months of planning, negotiations and form filling the Society has had the final go ahead for an in-depth archaeological investigation of the ancient monument at the summit of Twmbarlwm.

Cadw have provided the funding and CTS has engaged the professional services of Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust to perform the investigation. Preliminary work will start week commencing 7th October with various surveys that will include geo-physics, auger and borehole sampling.

Once the non-invasive searches are done it is the intention to open up some trenches to hopefully uncover some clues to the origins of this fascinating area. Depending on various factors the team may start an investigative trench or two in the first week.

The lead archaeologist, Richard Hankinson, from CPAT will be arriving on Monday 7th and CTS members will show him around the site for an initial assessment and to work out a timetable for the project’s next few weeks.

Over recent months we have gathered a list of potential volunteers who have expressed a wish to help out and they have been invited to a briefing meeting with Richard and Cadw officers on Monday evening 7th October. This is not a public meeting and numbers are limited but if you are interested in attending please contact us first.

There will be other meetings and opportunities to get involved as this project progresses so please keep visiting this site.

If you visit the mountain in the coming weeks please do not encroach on the area where the archaeologists are working and do not disturb anything on the ground marked off by warning tape. If time permits the archaeologists on-site will be willing to answer any queries you may have but remember they are here primarily to do a job of work.

At the end of the excavation period it is our intention to hold an open day on the mountain to show people the work done and later in the year it will be followed by an audio visual presentation, venue yet to be decided.

This is probably the first time that such in-depth research has been done into the mound and bailey castle and it may well provide some answers to the origins of The Twmp.
