Archaeology Update

NO NEWS – 07/05/2021

The rumour-mill on social media has already started – we are only just emerging from the pandemic lockdowns and people are already looking forward to the re-commencement of our archaeological project on Twmbarlwm. That’s good news in some ways because it illustrates there is still a lot of interest out there for our project and everyone is keen to get back out there to help out.

The CTS team have only recently started talking to the archaeology contractors to discuss possible dates to re-start the work – and as such we can’t give you any information as yet. But rest assured as soon as we know anything we will make announcements here and on our Facebook page.

No doubt there will be a need for volunteers to help out with the dig and research – we already have a list of volunteers gathered when the project started in 2019 and they will be given priority when this new phase starts again. If you are interested in helping out and would like to add your name to this list please contact us via email with your contact details and information of any experience you may have – please write to twmbarlwmsociety@gmail.com

THE STORY SO FAR

As you probably know the project started in the autumn of 2019 – we started with a geophys survey of the area but within two days atrocious weather conditions set in and we had to abandon that survey with it only half complete.

There was a brief respite in the weather at the end of October and we completed a core-sampling survey of the area – the results of which can be found in the blog entry – click here

Without a satisfactory result from the geophys survey it was decided to postpone the dig element of the project till the spring of 2020 – and as we all now know, the Covid 19 Pandemic came along at that time and put the brakes on all plans for the dig. We hoped to re-commence in the autumn but yet again we were thwarted when the second lockdown hit Wales.

And so here we are – over 18 months since we started this project – we still have the support of Cadw and the archaeological contractors in a state of readiness (Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust). Barring any further catastrophes we sincerely hope to be back on the mountain some time this coming summer in search of the archaeological answers to Twmbarlwm. If you would like to be part of it please get intouch

The full story so far is still available under the archaeological/blog tab above – please check out the entries.
