Just a Quick Note – 08/04/20
The e-newsletter of the Twmbarlwm Society
8th April 2020
Hello Folks
Just another little reminder that all events organised by CTS have been cancelled for the foreseeable future – this unfortunately includes our famous Hot-Cross-Bun walk that we usually do on Good Friday. You all know that it’s a local tradition to climb to the top of the Twmp on good Friday, but we shanghaied the event and made it our own by distributing hot-cross-buns to those who joined our walk.
I won’t be surprised if people get up there despite the Coronavirus lockdown but as a responsible society we cannot condone such action and would ask people to please stay at home – the mountain will still be there when this emergency comes to an end.
If anybody still insists on going up there please be sensible, respect social distancing and don’t do anything that could spread this nasty virus even further.
PAST GOOD FRIDAYS
I’ve been scanning in negatives of mine from the 1960s and 70s and came across a few from Good Friday 1971 – they are rubbish quality but they were developed by myself under the bed sheets.
Click here to see more of them online.
But they do show that back then plenty of people clambered to the top of the Twmp on Good Friday and had a great day out up there.
The photos show that there was no damage to the slopes leading up to the Twmp, there were no steps up the side of the Twmp (they were added in the mid 1980s) and that some commoners kept their ponies out on the hillside too.
I won’t be going up there myself this year which will be the first time for me to miss the event in an awful long time.
Can I suggest that instead of making the walk this year why don’t you dig out some of your old photos of the event and post them online or send them to me to add to our gallery.
Have you got any photos older than mine – I’d love to see them.
ARCHAEOLOGY
The planned Archaeological Investigation of Twmbarlwm is also put on hold at the moment and we can’t even forecast when the project may resume.
But meanwhile, there is a bibliography online, prepared by Will Davies of Cadw, which gives links to publications and websites that feature references to Twmbarlwm – this is a very good resource for anybody wishing to do further research into Twmbarlwm and its hillfort.
Please visit our website (www.twmbarlwm.co.uk) to see the Blog about the start of the archaeological investigation and other information.
