History of Newport Castle – Why? When? Who?

Widely assumed to date from the middle of the fourteenth century, Newport Castle has had a chequered and often misunderstood history.

In modern times its has been a tannery, a brewery and a nail factory and is now closed to the public. Ongoing research undertaken by Cadw has revealed it to be older than previously thought, its monumental structures serving more ambitious purposes than just defending a river crossing and its town.

The talk will answer the vital questions “WHY was the castle built?” – “WHEN was it built?” – and WHO built it?”

Will Davies is an inspector with Cadw and a local lad. His talk will feature the findings of his research and fieldwork on the castle over the last 15 years, covering its history and archaeology from the Norman Conquest to a remarkable Thirteenth Century feat of engineering, later industrial use and rescue from demolition and conservation by the Ministry of Works in the 1920s.

Will has worked closely with the Twmbarlwm Society over the years, particularly with the recent archaeological investigations on the hillfort atop the mountain. He is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about our local history and Newport Castle has been his passion for many years – you can look forward to a well presented talk with some new and exciting insights into this much-maligned castle on the banks of the River Usk.
