Newport Medieval Ship Talk

The Newport Medieval Ship

Cymdeithas Twmbarlwm Society presents an illustrated talk presented by Jeff Grosvenor, Volunteer Guide of the Newport Ship Project

The City of Newport and the mouth of the River Usk on which it stands is easily visible from the top of Twmbarlwm and I’m sure that back in the 15th Century country folk would have been on the Mynydd Maen ridgeway or on top of the mountain as the Portuguese built ship sailed up the river to what was to become it’s final resting place in the docks at Newport.

The locals probably wondered what cargo the ship was carrying from the far-off shores that they could only dream of – little did they know what fate had in store for the ship. Now that it has been recovered after over four centuries we are probably learning more about the ship than the locals could ever imagine.

Continuing our season of illustrated talks the Twmbarlwm Society presents a Fascinating talk by Mr. Jeff Grosvenor

Wednesday 5th April 2023
at Crosskeys RFC
7:30pm (doors open 7:00pm)

The discovery of the Newport Medieval Ship is internationally acclaimed as the most significant find of a fifteenth century vessel.

Charles Barker, Director of the prestigious Mary Rose Trust, has described it as ‘…probably more important than the Mary Rose’.

Furthermore, the archeological project covering Discovery, Excavation, and Conservation of the ship’s timbers is also internationally acclaimed as one of the best examples of an extremely thorough, disciplined, and innovative project which has used the most advanced recording techniques. The project has transformed historians’ understanding of developments in fifteenth-century ship technology and international trading relations.

Jeff Grosvenor has been a volunteer guide and committee member on the Newport Ship project for over 4 years and is also a committee member at the Newport Transporter Bridge.
