Sad news of a loyal supporter
Alun Booth – long serving supporter of CTS
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the Society’s oldest member, Mr Alun Booth. 95 year old Alun had been an active member of the Twmbarlwm Society from it’s inaugural meeting in 2010, and he served on the committee of Trustees for several years.
Alun was active in practically every project and event we ever ran and he was always very generous in donating towards raffles and other money raising events. He never missed a litter pick day, even joining us last month (May 28th), for a chat and his usual cup of coffee – we are very grateful to his son Gareth and daughter Lynne for driving him up the mountain to help us every month.
Alun was a great asset to the Society and inspiration to others, he will be sorely missed – we send our sincere condolences to his family.
Following are the words written by our founder, Rob Southall, on his Facebook page:
Some very sad news. My friend Alun Booth passed away last Saturday [17th June]. He was 95 years old and a long time resident of Newport but he had been born at Pantyffynnon Farm on Mynyddislwyn in 1927 and lived for many years in Wattsville.
I first got to know Alun in 2010 after setting up the Twmbarlwm Society and he was a trustee and active member of that from the starting. He had an amazing life as a steward, later chief steward, with BOAC flying originally on Flying Boats and Lancastrian Airliners (this was the civil version of the Lancaster bomber) before retiring on British Airways Boeing 747 jumbo jets.
He was a mine of information about local history and in 2012 when he was 84 we walked up to the ruins of Hafod Tudor farm above Wattsville which was no mean feat for someone his age.
He was a great personality, a real treasure, and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS
Alun’s funeral will be on Wednesday 12th July 2023 at 11:30 at Sirhowy Valley Crematorium, Pontllanfraith. NP12 2YT. Afterwards at the Three Horseshoes Pentwynmawr. NP11 4HN.
Family flowers only. Donations in lieu to St David’s Hospice care may given at the service. Online donations and messages of condolence may be left at www.philliptomandsons.co.uk.
