Tales from Lower Machen
presented by Wayne Barnett,
Lower Machen Churchwarden and Reluctant Author
On Wednesday 1st November 2023
Doors open at 7.00pm ready for a 7.30pm start.
- This talk covers the 1500-year history of Lower Machen Church which Cadw described as “Remarkable” when listing the church as Grade II*.
- It includes the story of The Morgans of Machen Ruperra and Tredegar’s growth, their decline through the 18th century, and how they bounced back in the Industrial Age.
- We meet some powerful ladies in the Morgan household including the spooky tale of the one who was nearly buried alive and Lady Rachel who put a curse on the Morgans!
- There are also the stories of the soldier who fought with Wellington against Napoleon and the 2 Morgan brothers who were at Balaclava.
- And in the 19th century there is the story of Revd Augustus Morgan who was instrumental in bringing education to the masses in the south Wales valley communities.
St. Michael & All Angels, Lower Machen,
…has been a place of Christian worship in the area for over 1500 years. The Church is claimed to have been founded in the 5th century by Glywys ap Solor, the early Welsh king of Glywysing (modern-day Glamorgan).
With such a long history, it is not surprising that the Church is home to many fascinating historical artefacts including the largest collection of Hatchments in any church in Wales and Monmouthshire and the fine Morgan Family Monuments in the Grade II* listed early 18th century Chapel.
CTS is pleased to be associated with the church and share an interest in local history and community activities – please click the title above to visit their website for more information.
Entry to the talk is FREE to CTS members or £3.00 to non-members (you can become a member of CTS for £10 on the night if you wish)
