Make sure you look up to the top of Twmbarlwm on the evening of 2nd June 2022 and you will see a beacon burning bright to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
This is a joint event organised by Cymdeithas Twmbarlwm Society and Risca Town Council. To kick off a weekend of national celebrations, we will be lighting a gas-fired Beacon on top of Twmbarlwm at 9:45 pm. Just like the Queen’s 90th Birthday Beacon in 2016 thousands of communities around the UK will be doing the same.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the logistics of organising too many people to the top of the mountain, the event is restricted to CTS members, Risca Town Council and invited people. People invited to attend are asked to meet at Risca Leisure Centre, around 8:30pm, where we will organise car sharing where possible to drive on up to the car park below the Tump at the end of Mountain Road. From there we will walk up the hill to the summit – it’s only half a mile, but very steep – so please make sure you are able to tackle the climb (and descent).
There will be speeches and an official proclamation read out before we light the Beacon at 9:45. The Beacon will burn for half hour or so and we will be able to see other Beacons in the distance participating in this special celebration. We will then descend to the car park guided by volunteers from local scout troops.
We hope to have enough volunteers to help us with various tasks on the night, but if you think you could help out please get in touch. It will still be daylight on the way up but dark on the way back so volunteers will be stationed to help guide people down.
Above all, if you are invited to come and join in the celebration, please make sure you wear stout shoes and dress appropriately for the weather conditions and for the terrain – and please bring a torch if you have one.
