Twmbarlwm Dig 2022 – Day 13
Twmbarlwm Dig 2022
– Day 13
Wednesday 24th August 2022
Another misty start to the day – 5 volunteers today including one new one (although she is the wife of a regular).
And today was the last day for two of the volunteers who have put a huge amount of time and effort into their contribution – you know who you are and many, many thanks to you.
The CPAT team arrived and wasted no time in loading up the car to get up to the top – and again as I didn’t go up myself I rely on Will’s report on the day’s work as follows:…

We’re on the final stretch now with our excavation at Twmbarlwm Hill (I will forgive him for calling it a hill – he’s from north Wales: Editor) in South Wales. Our trench across the south-eastern rampart is nearly complete, having reached the natural geology, and exposing the rock cut face of the rampart itself.
Over at the Motte, the ditch continued to be dug, also revealing the natural bedrock into which the ditch had been cut. We’ve not even reached the bottom of this ditch, and we suspect it continues quite some way!
With that though, our archaeologists set about recording this feature, drawing the section (side view) of the trench’s stratigraphy, and plotting the trench using GPS so that we can accurately illustrate its location in future plans and maps.
Elsewhere, it’s been a case of backfilling and returfing the remaining open trenches. It’s been a largely misty (sometimes atmospheric!) and damp day, but this hasn’t put the volunteers off one bit who are continuing to put in the hard work to the bitter end.
