Twmbarlwm Dig 2022 – Day 4
Twmbarlwm Dig 2022 – Day 4
Thursday 10th August
Three volunteers waiting for me when I arrived at 9am and another old mate of mine, Mike R. arrived unexpectedly to join in. Will from Cadw brought another pair of helping hands as he had work experience student Amber with him.
The CPAT team arrived, loaded all their equipment into the Landy and set off up the mountain. It was already extremely hot and I felt almost guilty sending them all off up the mountain to work in this unrelenting sun.
As I wasn’t up the mountain myself – I relied on Jack’s CPAT Twitter feed to keep you informed – as follows…

DIG DIARY – Day 4, Thursday 11th August Another hot, dry and dusty day up at Twmbarlwm hill-fort for us, but still we made progress with the undying enthusiasm of the volunteers. In Trench 1 we have revealed one of the areas of stone rubble (mentioned yesterday).
Our objective here is to unpick the loose stones from those that are more firmly set in place. In doing so, we are beginning to see a curving edge of what could be a wall, and another straight edge on the other side which could be part of the same wall or another wall altogether.
This is a good example of how reflexive the archaeological excavation process is, of how we follow the evidence in front of us and modify our interpretations, and not governed too heavily by preconceived ideas – we unpick, clean back, record, assess – and around this cycle goes.
Thank you Jack – click here to follow CPAT on Twitter – not just this dig but all their other projects.
