Twmbarlwm – Prehistory to 21st Century

An illustrated talk presented by Amelia Pannett (Cadw Field Monument Warden) and Will Davies (Cadw Regional Inspector)

Wednesday 26th Sept 2018
at Crosskeys RFC at 7.00pm

Twmbarlwm is an enigmatic monument that has been the focus for activity from the prehistoric period to the modern day.

This promises to be a fascinating talk presented by two local archaeologists both of whom work for Cadw, the historic environment service of the Welsh Government.

The talk will incorporate many new images taken from the recent archaeological drone survey of the mountain and the talk will shed light on the monument’s history from the Bronze Age burials and the Iron Age fortifications to the Norman reuse of the hill-fort and the more modern management of the landscape.

Will and Amelia on a recent visit to Twmbarlwm to examine the damage inflicted by the forestry fires in July 2018.

Will and Amelia are both archaeologists with Cadw. Will has recently been appointed as Cadw Regional Inspector with responsibility for south-east Wales and his speciality is castles and the medieval period.

Amelia, who is the local Field Monument Warden for Cadw, has a view of Twmbarlwm from her house that gives her a special interest in the area, she is a prehistorian who has excavated at Llanmelin, one of the other hillforts of Gwent.

Will and Amelia are also currently heavily involved in examining the environment of Twmbarlwm since the devastating fires that swept across the mountain in July this year. They will be looking at the implications that the fires have on the archaeology and they are working with various agencies to establish the best way forward to manage the landscape and the historical monument into the future.

The talk will end with a Q & A session.
